NextStar Energy Begins Mass Production

  • The Windsor battery plant has begun mass production of lithium-ion battery cells
  • NextStar Energy has an unwavering commitment to quality, safety and performance
  • Over 1100 employees have been hired to date as operations continue to ramp up

18 November 2025 – Windsor, ON – NextStar Energy today announced that it has officially begun mass production at its battery manufacturing facility. The start of production of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells follows a successful commissioning phase of its equipment and processes.

Battery cells produced at NextStar Energy follow a precise, sequential manufacturing process. The company has an unwavering commitment to quality that ensures the highest standards of safety, consistency and performance are upheld, reinforcing the facility’s dedication to excellence in advanced battery technology.

“Quality and safety are at the core of everything we do,” said Brett Hillock, Chief Operating Officer at NextStar Energy. “Our team is well prepared for this moment, and we’re working very closely with our partners to ensure that NextStar Energy is consistently delivering the highest quality product possible, and that Windsor is at the forefront of innovative battery manufacturing.”

This latest milestone comes after three years of construction on the 4.23 million-square-foot facility, which saw over 9,000 Canadian trades workers contribute more than 8.4 million safe work hours to bring the project to life.

NextStar Energy received its Occupancy Permit in September, marking the official end of the construction phase, and the start of industrialization.

NextStar Energy also recently announced its expansion into cell production for Energy Storage Systems (ESS) to meet a growing demand. The ESS market is rapidly expanding and is expected to grow significantly over the next decade, driven in part by AI data centres and the increasing need for grid stability. LFP battery cells are being manufactured for NextStar Energy’s joint venture partner LG Energy Solution.

As Canada’s first and only large-scale, industrialized lithium-ion battery manufacturing facility, NextStar brings a significant competitive edge to compete on a global scale. Its ability to quickly adapt to evolving market demands with diverse chemistries and product offerings positions the plant at the forefront of Canadian innovative battery technology.

The NextStar Energy team has grown to over 1100 employees, nearly 400 of whom were trained through Battery Boost, a highly specialized training program that prepares local workers for a career in battery manufacturing.
